DJ Top Buzz Profile
Top Buzz started out as Patrick and
Michael, better known to many as Mikey B, that was back around
December 1988. Back then things were much different to today, I’m
referring to the scene in general, it was still in it’s early stages
and people were only just experiencing the friendly atmosphere that
Rave had to offer, this was what appealed to both Patrick and Mikey
at the time. Patrick was on the decks back then, as was Mikey, but
Patrick couldn’t mix at all, so after a few words on the mic which
seemed to go down well, he decided to stay on the mic as an MC.
Jason Jay came along after about a year, so there were then three of
them in the team although many people only thought there were the
two, Mikey and Jason used to DJ when they were available to play,
sometimes taking it in turns. The first real break for Top Buzz came
when Amnesia House went to Rage, they gave Amnesia a tape and soon
after were booked to play in Coventry.
After that things just went from good to better, the Top Buzz name
spread around and soon they had appeared on numerous flyers,
including Fantazia at Donington Park, Universe and Obsession, to
name only a few. Patrick soon became known throughout the scene for
his lyrics. The Top Buzz show was exactly that, a Top Buzz! I
remember travelling right across the country many weekends just to
follow them around. As soon as they came on stage you recognised
that distinctive style, and the rest, well that’s history. In 1994
they released ‘Living In Darkness’, which was without any doubt an
anthem of the scene. Still playing that track today brings back
floods of memories and still gets the crowd rocking as much as it
ever did.
But as with most good things in life, all good things must come to
an end. The three people behind Top Buzz eventually fell out, for
personal reasons as well as business. Perhaps it proves that it is
always best if you don’t mix business and pleasure. Patrick
continues to MC at events, MC’ing over all of the respected Jungle
DJ’s on the circuit, he still even MC’s over Jason Jay, which
brought back fond memories at a Dreamscape event no so long ago.
Patrick also hopes to release a track one day with his vocals on and
take it to No. 1 in the charts. He has always felt that it was the
vocals that could take the scene further by giving it the exposure
it deserves. In the commercial market, this has been recently proved
with the commercialisation of Jungle music through tracks that
contain vocals, Jason continues to DJ, so does Mikey B, (for those
of you confused up in Scotland, this isn’t the Mikey B that you all
know so well for Techno, they just happen to have the same name!)
but work for them all is slower than when they were together as a
team, but at least they are now their own entity, they can be
respected for what they are and what they do, so at the end of the
day it will be their ability to perform that will provide them with
longevity in the scene of today. Only time will tell.
In a small up date, Jason
Kaye & Mikey B have now been reunited after Mikey B spent a period
in prison. They now once again perform at many of the
Old Skool events as Top Buzz..... Including at Obsession at
the Brunel Rooms in 2004.
